Professional Continued...
1990-91 – Zimbabwe: offered a job as
Design and Development Engineer for a medium sized pottery industry. However,
unable to obtain the necessary work permit I opted to cross the border into
South Africa.
1991-93 – Johannesburg: Ran a welding and metal
fabrication business making car ports and fancy architectural steelwork
employing two African metalworkers. Moved to a conference centre where I was the maintenance man for a year,
renovating gutters, window frames and installing a complex
ceiling lighting system.
1993-98 – Knysna: a seaside resort: Designed and built a timber house
for myself employing and supervising local builders. Set up a business restoring
antique furniture which I ran for two years. Started building
drums and marimbas employing two local assistants. Ran free music and dance workshops in
the townships nearby for school kids
1999-2003 - McGregor (Western Cape): purchased a 10% share in a farm/ conference center. I was manager and developer of the property and the project for three
years.
2003-04 – UK: Eight months return to explore opportunities.
2004 - 06 Hogsback: South Africa - renovated a house (my own) and ran courses on
geometric design. Did local welding fabrication and carpentry jobs employing two
assistants.
2004–08 - Bedford Eastern Cape: restoring another house and doing video
editing and DVD writing/copying as a part-time business.
During the last four years I have
developed my web site and within the last six months started adding
Appropriate
Technology designs.
